In celebration of College Radio Week, we asked a few of our top college stations to tell us a little bit about themselves: what makes their station unique, what they love about internet radio and what College Radio Day means to them.
WKRB is the only station in NYC to feature an Electronic Dance Music format and also includes specialty programs each night that feature genres not available on commercial stations in the area. In addition to music, WKRB also provides local news and sports. Each summer, WKRB broadcasts the Brooklyn Cyclones, a local minor-league baseball team, not regularly covered on any other local media.
“Internet radio has been a real boost for WKRB and college radio in general. Before we started streaming, listeners struggled to receive the station 1-mile away. Now we have listeners all over the world and the proliferation of smartphones and listening apps have made that even more portable. It’s an incredible feeling to know that every time you turn on the mic, you not only reach your local community, but the global community as well. We hope that more campuses realize the potential of college radio and decide to really give their college a voice.”
While Nashville is widely known as the mecca of country music, there are plenty of folks in this town who like to do things a little differently. WRVU Nashville is the place for them. From local garage rock to European electro-pop, there’s a place for almost anything on our station, whether it be morning Jazz programs or lively talk shows. Our DJs have an ear for picking out exciting rising acts and under-appreciated classics, and that’s how we bring you the best music you’ve never heard of.
“College Radio Day is an important tool for spreading the word about a rewarding activity that goes unnoticed to many outside the radio sphere. Getting to share our personalities and interests with our listeners is what makes radio truly special, so having a day that celebrates this and spreads our reach to a larger audience is a great opportunity for all of us.”
